Basin Margin Natural Gas

Biogenic natural gas accumulations on the Williston Basin (WB) margins are represented by production in both North Dakota and Canada. West Short Pines Hills production occurs on the WB southwestern margins in South Dakota and is evidenced in this photo of a test flare from a Bowers Oil and Gas well in Harding County. Recent industry drilling activity in Harding and Butte Counties (EOGR and Delta Petroleum) seeks to extend basin margin production in South Dakota. Structures such as the
Undrilled Gas Anticline in Butte Co, await development. (photo by J. Bowers)

West and Central South Dakota is underlain by the SWB The Basin's thick Paleozoic and Mesozoic sections pinch out here and the entire Basin in the state can be described as ranging from under explored to unexplored. Inyan Kara Group is currently developing gas and oil prospects in South Dakota.
